Updated: Dec 22, 2020

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is Washington D.C. librarian Ellen Dodsworth. She has worked in a variety of library jobs including a cruise ship! Click here to listen now!

Here are some librarian influencer tips Ellen shared:

  • Be willing to step out of the purview lines of your job.

  • Be resilient.

  • During the pandemic, Ellen has focused a lot on event planning since that was a key part of her role before.

  • She collaborates with teachers to build research modules in Canvas. These modules will carry over to the future when students return to school face-to-face.

  • Ellen strives to keep a sense of normalcy for her students who are 100% remote at this time.

  • She hosts virtual book clubs and even sends pizza out to the club members at their home.

Collaboration is a key part of Ellen’s role as a librarian. Here are some collaboration tips:

  • Work smarter, not harder. Share your programming with others in your district.

  • She collaborates with a teacher and the PTA president to create flyers and such for her school’s Instagram account.

  • Find community organizations that will support your library programming. They can help pay for things like book distributions to your students.

  • Hone your grant writing skills.
