Libraries Foster Connection, Even from a Distance : with Terra Hazen

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is California librarian, Terra Hazen. Terra is a former science teacher who became a librarian 4 years ago. She is currently involved with distance learning in her school library. Click here to listen now!

Here are some Librarian Influencer strategies Terra shared:

  • Terra created a lot of tutorials at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and ordered digital tools to complement her print collection.

  • She provides support for teachers and brings in digital literacy and project based learning.

  • She works hard to make the curriculum more engaging and current.

  • Terra increased circulation by genrefying her collection.

  • She worked hard to reinvigorate the library program and now teachers and staff are seeing the library and librarian as useful and relevant again.

  • She provides enrichment opportunities and supports teachers in moving beyond their comfort zones.

Here are some of Terra’s tips concerning Virtual Clubs

  • During Covid-19, extracurricular social activities don’t build spontaneously and students are missing their opportunities to connect with their peers.

  • Terra sent out a survey to see what clubs students wanted to continue from the previous year and what ideas they had for new clubs

  • She presented results to the staff and asked for staff sponsors.

  • Terra facilitates a Virtual Book Club, Drama Club and Technology Tuesday (STEM) club.

  • Her Drama Club is exploring Zoom Plays. Here are some helpful links she's found: https://www.theatrefolk.com/ https://www.playscripts.com/ Both have general scripts as well as scripts designed specifically to be performed on Zoom. The filter functions can be used to search for scripts matching specific age ranges, number of participants etc.
