Librarians Transform, Adapt and Lead: with Diamantina Garcia

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is 11 year veteran librarian, Diamantina Garcia. She recently transitioned from an elementary to middle school library position in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD. Right now her district is still engaged in remote learning. Click here to listen now!

Here are some Librarian Influencer strategies Diamantina shared for early-career librarians:

  • Remember your influencer is the entire campus.

  • Jump into your new job realizing the change to a new career can make you nervous. Don’t reject an offer because of the fear of the unknown.

  • Build your lines of communication with other librarians to help you ease into your job.

  • Learn to rely on students to help you with day to day tasks like shelving books. They can do it!

  • Be the resource for your campus. Be the person on campus that knows the latest trends in technology, the resources that help teachers, students and staff in the classroom to get the job done.

  • Don’t be scared to try new things. I learned about Breakout Edu and was very nervous to try it. But, now I’ve even trained others to host Breakouts!

  • Dina and some other district librarians have presented to principal groups and board of directors to show them the library resources for students and teachers.

  • DIna recommends joining your state library association.

  • Learn about the trends happening in libraries across the nation. Try it out. If it doesn’t work, then tweak it. But, realize not everything works in all settings.

  • She loves finding ideas on Pinterest and Facebook groups.
