Without the Librarian the Library Is Just a Room of Books: with Kayla McNaughton

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is New Yorker Kayla McNaughton. After 5 years in the library, Kayla switched jobs this summer to become a Teacher Integration Specialist where she supports librarians and teachers across her vast county. Click here to listen now!

Here are some Librarian Influencer strategies Kayla shared for early-career librarians:

  • Jump in! It’s OK to try new things when you are the new librarian, even when you are replacing an awesome librarian. Your ideas are valid.

  • If your administration selected you for this position, they believe you can do the job.

  • You, as the librarian, are more than just the library space. The librarian is the real magic!

  • Don’t forget how amazing you are!

  • Her agency hosts Tuesday Talks where districts gather by primary and secondary librarian group and talk about what they are working on. The meetings are not recorded. It’s a time to brainstorm and support each other.

  • Partner with your public libraries to provide even more resources to your students and their families.

  • Think about this. What is it that you really enjoy doing as the librarian? Find a way to do that now, even if you are doing remote learning.
