Representation Matters: with Melissa Silerio

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is librarian Melissa Silerio. She works in a middle school library in Mansfield ISD in Texas. Her first year as a librarian was the year COVID 19 began. Click here to listen now!

Here are some librarian influencer tips Melissa shared:

  • Learn to pivot. How will you bring your library to students at home?

  • Find a way to connect with students virtually. She used S’more, Canvas and Microsoft TEAMS.

  • Collaborate with other librarians in the district to accomplish more together.

  • She created a virtual library in Canvas. Her goal was to create a virtual version of everything she has in the physical library.

  • She started a mini professional learning series for teachers about virtual learning and engagement.

Melissa wants to encourage librarians to take a closer look at their collection because representation matters.

  • Work to have a relevant collection that reflects your student body.

  • Your collection should also introduce students to others who are different from them.

  • Listen to your students suggestions and build a collection they want to read.
