The Librarian Influencer of the Week is Pennsylvania elementary librarian, Jennifer Roth. She is actively involved in the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association. Her ongoing goal is to advocate that the library is more than just storytime and book checkout. Click here to listen to her interview now.
Here are some Librarian Influencer strategies Jennifer shared for early-career librarians:
She recommends getting to know your staff and students before weeding the library, otherwise you might have to reorder some of the titles.
She published a monthly staff reading newsletter in collaboration with her reading specialist.
Prioritize your time to determine what needs to get done today vs tomorrow.
Build relationships with staff and students so you can strengthen your campus reading culture.
During COVID 19, she uses Flipgrid for staff members to provide a story for students to listen to. Students log in and select a story to enjoy.
Reading is tied to everything you do in the library, even in STEM activities.
She creates lessons to tie into what teachers are currently doing in the classroom.
She introduces technology tools to students so the teacher doesn’t have to struggle with this. Then students are prepared to use the tech tool with the teacher.
She has posted a lot of ideas on Pinterest and tweets current ideas on Twitter.
