Have Fun Learning: with Karey Killian

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is Karey Killian, a library media specialist in rural Pennsylvania. She supports 900 students at two elementary schools. She loves seeing the joy on their faces when they make new discoveries! Click here to listen to her interview now.

Here are some Librarian Influencer strategies Karey shared for early-career librarians:

  • She considers herself a servant librarian. Her job is to support the whole school community.

  • Realize that your job is never done at the end of the day.

  • She learned to cover the same topic and vary the depth for grade bands: Kinder-2nd and 3rd-5th grade. You don’t have to do different lessons for each grade.

  • She is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) and is a go-to person for technology integration.

  • She uses Microsoft Teams to organize her lesson plans. All of her resources are in one spot.

Be sure to have fun learning! Here are some of Karey’s ideas:

  • Start a makerspace so students can discover new things.

  • She uses Flipgrid to allow the students to share their learning with each other. They would show what they created and students could respond.

  • She started a Microsft Teams Channel called Home Adventures where 4th graders are sharing what they are doing at home or issuing fun challenges for each other.

  • Learn something new with your students every day. Empower them to teach the teacher.

  • When you create a positive learning community in the brick and mortar school setting, that will be evident in the virtual learning environment as well.
