Here are some librarian influencer tips Margie shared:

  • If you are fortunate enough to have experienced paraprofessional help in your library, learn all you can from them. They have a wealth of skills.

  • Take it one day at a time.

  • Be flexible and work out ways to continue your library program virtually.

  • Work with ELA and all content area teachers to conduct virtual lessons.

Margie wants to encourage librarians to take a closer look at diverse literature.

  • She developed and hosts an annual young adult book festival called Border Book Bash.

  • Look beyond race for a broader definition of diverse literature for the community you serve.

  • Books are the best tools to help your students to learn about others outside their community.

  • Let students read what they want to read and focus less on reading levels.

  • Librarians need to stay up with their own reading of current books.

  • Librarians need to have in-depth knowledge of the books in their collection so they can recommend books to their audience.

  • Margie is the editor for an upcoming anthology released in August 2021. Living Beyond Borders: Growing Up Mexican in America.
