Here are some librarian influencer tips Margie shared:
If you are fortunate enough to have experienced paraprofessional help in your library, learn all you can from them. They have a wealth of skills.
Take it one day at a time.
Be flexible and work out ways to continue your library program virtually.
Work with ELA and all content area teachers to conduct virtual lessons.
Margie wants to encourage librarians to take a closer look at diverse literature.
She developed and hosts an annual young adult book festival called Border Book Bash.
Look beyond race for a broader definition of diverse literature for the community you serve.
Books are the best tools to help your students to learn about others outside their community.
Let students read what they want to read and focus less on reading levels.
Librarians need to stay up with their own reading of current books.
Librarians need to have in-depth knowledge of the books in their collection so they can recommend books to their audience.
Margie is the editor for an upcoming anthology released in August 2021. Living Beyond Borders: Growing Up Mexican in America.
