Combining Literacy and Coding Together to Create Projects That Are Personal and Meaningful

The Librarian Influencer of the Week is Nicole Kang. She studied engineering at MIT and fell in love with education as she worked on various education related projects. Her website www.elementari.io was one of the recipients of the 2019 AASL Best Website for Teaching and Learning Award. Click here to listen now!

Here are some coding tips Nicole shared:

  • Nicole noted that the AASL standards include digital creation and publishing. Her website supports this by allowing students to create stories and publish them.

  • Nicole says that coding is another way for students to express themselves in the digital realm.

  • She mentioned that coding is something librarians can add to a rotation station, including a digital rotation during this pandemic.

  • Students love the immediate feedback they get from coding.

  • Elementari is a website platform for K-12 students. There is a free and paid version of this website.

  • Clubs, open to the public and free. She also streams these clubs live so you can join virtually to learn more about them. Learn about how to create your own story coding club here.

  • She wants to help people combine coding and literacy. They are combined in the real world. Her website is built for storytelling purposes. She uses a node based visual coding environment that looks like a flowchart (flow based programming).   • Elementari is an authoring tool that allows you to create and publish things ranging from static picture books to games.

  • Nicole is creating a coding club package to help educators use her site.
